WHAT?
A young start-up located in Barcelona developed a mechanism which generates energy from the photosynthesis of a plant and transforms it into green power. Sounds crazy? It is! But eco-friendly and pretty cool 🙂
The founders of Arkyne Technologies use the natural processes of a plant to extract the produced energy, which charges your phone in the next step via USB cable – without any synthesized power. You can charge your phone up to 3 times a day/night, independent of solar radiation. And your new charging station doesn’t even take longer than charging a phone through a computer. Bioo Lite, of course, can only work if the plant is healthy and alive. But if for any reason your plant is dying, it’s a shame but in this case no big deal: just buy a new one, implant and you’re ready to charge again!
HOW?
The financing via crowdfunding gave Arkyne Technologies the possibility to develop and test their green product at first. Integrated in a flowerpot the mechanism of Bioo Lite is principally working with any random plant, but you have to consider that different plants produce a different amount of power (cactuses for example are not recommended because they do not produce enough power).
The process which is behind this genious invention isn’t as complicated as you may think: While the plant is converting CO² into O², water drips into the ground which trickles into an artificial membrane integrated in the flowerpot. Germs which were included to the membrane produce power out of the available oxygen and the water extracted from the plant. This power is transferred through a connected USB cable and can now charge the battery of your phone.
WHEN?
The Bioo Lite flowerpot with integrated mechanism, but without a plant will be available from December 2016 for 99 US$ and is supposed to reduce the power consumption massively. The detailed functionality and further information about Bioo Lite can be found here.

We already love this green energy system and want to test Bioo Lite flowerpots in our Sleep Green Hotels, because: green plus green results in more green 🙂
