Sustainability

The Raphael Hotel Wälderhaus is situated within the WÄLDERHAUS, an IBA (International Building Exhibition) excellence project. The key idea behind this multi- functional building is a convincing demonstration of the interconnecting relationships between forests, the environment and sustainability. Visitors to the Science Center Wald, which covers a surface area of 650 m2, can discover the diversity of local woods and forests with all their senses.

This is supported by a comprehensive educational programme on the subject of the environment in the Forum Wald.
The high level of sustainability is achieved through the way the building is constructed, environmentally-aware management and the technical building services. The exterior walls are made from untreated larch wood and provide a habitat for plants and animals.

The same applies to the green roof, which features 9000 bushes and 500 local trees and acts as an ecological buffer zone. The hotel rooms are located in the top three floors of the building, which are built from solid wood and comply with passive house building standards.

Technical building equipment

  • Use of geothermal energy for heating (94 energy piles connected to a heat pump)
  • Photovoltaic system on the roof
  • Electricity from 100% renewable energy sources
  • Highly efficient lighting technology (80% LED, 20% energy-saving lights)
